CA – September, 2006: Hills of Africa Travel is the first company in the United
States to offer “Fair Trade Tourism” safaris to the North American
traveller. “I’m thrilled to participate in what we believe is an important
step forward for tourism,” notes Hills of Africa president and founder
Meredith Hill.
In
2002, Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) officially launched a new
certification program in South Africa. “This marked the first time in the
history of the Fair Trade Movement that a Fair Trade label had been
created for the tourism sector,” Hill explains.
The
FTTSA certification Trademark is an independent and respected symbol of
fair and responsible business practice in the tourism industry, and is
monitored to maintain high standards. The Trademark is awarded to tourism
businesses in South Africa that adhere to Fair Trade criteria such as fair
wages and working conditions; fairness in operations, purchasing and
distribution of benefits; ethical business practice; and respect for human
rights, culture and environment.
